Dark Skies 2024

As part of our masterplan to gain Dark Skies status our residents Trish and Jonathon Bell continue to record light readings at various locations on the headland. The initial readings taken showed they were fulfilling the criteria and we hope to have all the readings done by March 2025 and therefore have enough information to complete an application.

Astronomer / astrophotographer Steven Gray gave us a professional entertaining and interesting presentation on the aspects of Dark Skies in 2023.  He covered items such as the Dark Skies status procedure, the various designations, parks, sites and how light pollution impacts on humans, wildlife and the environment. Steven has kindly agreed to guide us through the procedure for Gallan Head to acquire Dark Skies status.  Steven operates a mobile Cosmos Planetarium and is Secretary of British Association Planetaria, elected fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Winston Churchill memorial trust travelling fellow, STEM ambassador, member of the International Planetarium Society & Member of the International Dark Skies Association
