The midsummer date is set based on the planet’s rotational axis. It’s decided based on the earth’s tilt towards the sun, which hits its maximum at 23° 26′ and falls between June 20 and June 22 in the northern hemisphere. We will gather at Gallan Beag to watch the sunrise from the north-easterly direction; you can either stay up all night or wake up early. We will use a monolith to mark the suns rising at a site on Gallan Head. On the evening of the 21st we will meet again to mark the suns setting. Our aim is to build a monument that clearly displays the exact rise and fall of the sun on the solstice’s and equinoxes. This is the first of four events we will be doing the same for the winter solstice and the equinoxes. Anyone who would like to come along and celebrate the longest day with us! join us at Gallan Beag for star gazing, snacks, drinks and memorable sunrise and sunset.
